A beautiful Estate.
Abundant flora & fauna.

The Hays of Errol occupied the Errol Estate and Carse of Gowrie from the 10th century. To this day, the Estate holds a deeply historic connection within the local community.

In 1875 the house was rebuilt after a devastating fire destroyed most of it. William Ogilvy was the proprietor at that time. On William’s death he bequeathed the house and Estate to his great friend and third cousin Hamish Heriot Maitland.

Hamish lived in Portsmouth where he had been serving in the army. He had very little money and no assets. He promptly moved his family from Portsmouth to Errol and since the 1920’s it has been the Heriot Maitland family home.

Our grounds and gardens are expertly managed to maintain their diversity of flora and fauna. Expect an explosion of colour and fresh scents in spring and summer as the wild flowers burst into life. The flurry of autumnal gold and orange colours creates a magical setting, not to mention a photographer’s dream.

The grounds are home to a selection of beautiful ancient oak trees and yews. Around 1875 when the house was rebuilt the gardens and surrounding parklands (the ‘policies’) received a planting of new specimen trees including three types of large cedars and rhododendrons.

There are 31 magnificent Wellingtonias (or Californian redwoods) that line the drive, and many other conifers and hardwoods can be seen. The much-adorned native Red Squirrels reside at Errol Park. We’re particularly proud of our conservation project to protect them as their species has seen a drastic decline in recent years.
